What is the Pre-Professional Skills Test?
Learn about the Praxis Series tests
Pre-Professional Skills Tests
The Praxis Series tests are used by states as part of their
teaching licensing certification process. Praxis I: Pre-Professional
Skills Test measures basic academic skills in reading, writing, and
mathematics.
Official Praxis I test scores must be submitted before beginning
a licensure program.
The Minnesota Board of Teaching requires licensure applicants to
pass several standardized Praxis Series tests. These tests are
offered several times a year and are taken after enrolling in a
teacher education programs, but before being recommended for
licensure. You are responsible for registering for and taking
Praxis Series tests by the required deadlines.
You must pass the following tests to be recommended for
teaching licensure:
- Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) for
reading, writing, and mathematics. The tests must be completed
prior to the first term of attendance. You can take these
tests while you're still an undergraduate. The tests must be
taken before you can be recommended for licensure.
The test may be taken either by pencil/paper (PPST) or by
computer (CBT). CBT is offered on campus at the University’s
Computer-Based Testing Center, 9 Eddy Hall, 192 Pillsbury
Drive S.E., Minneapolis MN 55455; 612-624-5520).
Each year Tests at a Glance and The Praxis Series
Information and Registration Bulletin are printed by the
Education Testing Service (ETS), publisher of the Praxis Series
tests. These will answer many of your questions and help you
review for the test. These publications are available on the
ETS Praxis Series Web site and at Student Services (612-625-6501).
Registration for the test by contacting
ETS. You can choose the University as your testing site or
another location more convenient for you.
The following tests must be taken before licensure program
completion:
- Praxis II: Subject Assessments
(see individual program requirements for required test).
- Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT)
Tests.
This test must be taken during the final term of the student
teaching experience.
More information about the Minnesota teaching licensure
application process will be presented during the M.Ed. program. Your
instructors and adviser will assist you through the process.
