Alumni recipients of national and Minnesota teacher awards

Tracy Cross (M.Ed. '08, early childhood education), math coach at Galtier Magnet Elementary School in St. Paul, won this year's award. The Milken Award provides public recognition and an unrestricted financial award of $25,000 to teachers, principals, and specialists who are furthering excellence in education.

Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award

This award, sponsored by Education Minnesota, began in 1964. Since that time, 40 percent of those teachers honored have done graduate work or received undergraduate and/or graduate degrees from the College of Education and Human Development, Twin Cities. Recent recipients are:

  • 2009: Amber Damm (M.Ed., curriculum and instruction, '02)
  • 2007: Michael Smart (M.A., '03, curriculum and instruction)
  • 2006: Lee-Ann Stephens (B.A., '89, elementary education; M.Ed., '97, curriculum and instruction)
  • 2005: Glen Sorenson (B.S., '76, science education)
  • 1999: Ellen Delaney (M.Ed., '90, mathematics education; Certificate, '06, staff development)
  • 1992: Rita Wigfield (B.A., '67, elementary education)

Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

This award is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Enacted by Congress in 1983, this program authorizes the President to bestow up to 108 awards each year.

  • 2004: Gregory Childs (M.Ed., '05, curriculum and instruction)
