TRiO SSS Advantages

  • TRiO SSS students enroll in the same required and elective courses as all other CEHD freshmen, including a First Year Inquiry course.
Additionally, TRiO SSS students are expected to register for at least one two-credit Integrated Learning (IL) course in their first year. IL courses are small 18- to 25-student recitation or discussion classes that help students succeed in challenging courses such as biology and psychology.

  • Students who enroll in TRiO SSS IL classes earn better grades than other University students enrolled in the same classes without the IL component. IL classes help students develop effective study skills and habits. IL instructors reinforce concepts that are introduced in lectures with cooperative group problem-solving exercises, presentations, and recitation.
  • TRiO SSS advisers have smaller student caseloads, so when problems and questions arise, students almost always see their adviser within a day or two.
  • TRiO SSS provides a limited amount of scholarship funds to participants with Pell Grants and unmet financial need.
  • TRiO SSS students are encouraged and supported in developing leadership skills and engaging in campus and community activities as well as learning abroad opportunities.
  • The TRiO SSS Student Advisory Board helps participants develop leadership experience. The board organizes food drives, social events, and philanthropic drives activities, and the opportunity to attend conferences.
  • TRiO SSS students have the opportunity to develop study partnerships with peers and mentoring relationships with faculty and advisers.
