Baird is acquiring a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Minnesota, studies quantitative measurement and latent human factors, and will pursue a graduate program--further specializing into quantitative measurement. After graduate studies, Nicholas will research virtual user environments to improve psychological benefits associated with use.

Measurement Matters: Effects of Measurement Error on One-Sample t- Tests

Abstract: Widely accepted throughout literature, measurement error leads to erroneous conclusions, inevitably resulting in resource loss for researchers. Problematically, few researchers model measurement error and its implications. David J. Weiss and Nicholas E. Baird conducted an exploratory study within the field of quantitative measurement based in Item Response Theory. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a series of means were obtained using 6 different test conditions under 3 different sample groups. Next, one-sample t tests were performed on the obtained means to generate a Type I error rate which reflected the measurement error in the testing conditions. Conditions with excellent tests showed a mean Type I error rate of .055, regardless of sample group. Conditions with poor tests showed a mean Type I error rate of .295, across sample groups. Measurement error can greatly increase the chance of accepting an erroneous conclusion and can be modeled through Item Response Theory. Download poster. [PDF]

Dr. David J. Weiss is a professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Minnesota. After graduating in 1963 from the University of Minnesota (Ph. D. in Psychology), Dr. Weiss dedicated his work to advancing quantitative methodology. Founder of the Applied Psychological Measurement journal, Dr. Weiss has truly bore the torch of knowledge for this science. Weiss' primary interest is in computerized adaptive testing (CAT). CAT is a way of constructing and administering tests for any psychological variable with interactive computers.
