About James

James Cooper was born in Liberia, West Africa, and immigrated to the United States at the age of nine with his family. As a teen, James served in his first professional role working with youth as a Program Instructor and Mentor for the Hennepin County Library Teen Tech Squad (what is now known today as the Best Buy Teen Tech Center at Minneapolis Central Library). James served in this role for four years where he grew a passion for mentoring youths and promoting educational development.

James then went on to college where he received two bachelors’ degree in Management and Marketing, Summa Cum Laude, from Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU).

While attending school at MSU, James served as a Maverick Mentor and Community Advisor, for three years, for the Residential Life department. His main responsibilities were to advise and assist first year students with their transition into college. James also served on the Student Activities Board, as well as other committees, where the main purpose were to promote campus inclusion and pride.

After graduating college, James spent over two years working in the business sector of two corporations. James eventually realized it was time to get back to his true passion of advising and youth outreach. That is what brought him to TRIO Upward Bound as the College Access Advisor and Residential Coordinator in 2017.

In his spare time, James loves to travel and create new adventures. He also enjoys spending time with family and friends, especially on board game nights!
