About Max

Max enjoys learning about other cultures. He received his bachelor’s degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Arizona. After graduating, Max spent five years living and teaching English in Japan. During that time, he taught kindergarten, elementary, and middle school. Max quickly developed a love for teaching and sought a career in education upon his return to America.

Max joined the Upward Bound (UB) program at the University of Minnesota in 2010 as an instructor during both the academic year and summer services. Through his work with the program, Max developed a passion for helping high school students develop the skills needed to enter and succeed in college. In order to better serve students, Max started and completed a master’s in education and a certificate in college admissions counseling from Hamline University. After graduating, Max worked for the College Success Program (CSP) at Century Community College. He provided academic support to 240 students enrolled in developmental reading courses. After the completion of the CSP grant, he rejoined the UB team in 2014 as the College Access Advisor & Residential Coordinator. In 2017, he became the Academic Services Coordinator.

In his spare time, Max enjoys being outdoors; he loves to fish, bike, and hike. He also likes to cook and try exciting new foods.
