Students Spotlight
My
name is Mark Meckstroth and I am currently a Junior majoring in
Agricultural Leadership Training and Development. However, I do
not come from the background that might be expected from someone
in my field of study. I was raised in a suburb of Milwaukee, WI,
in which my high school did not even have an agriculture
department. Oddly enough the only exposure I really had to
agriculture came from my father's storytelling of his farm
growing up and visiting my grandparent's farm in the summers.
Why then did I choose to pursue an education in agriculture? As
the first day of class of my freshman year approached I found
myself asking the same question. However, once I arrived on
campus and was exposed to my classes and classmates I found my
reservations vanish. I fell in love with the atmosphere and
camaraderie that my classes and the St. Paul campus had to
offer. I found the classes challenging, exciting and most of all
enjoyable.
My advice to those considering the pursuit of an agriculture
based degree at the University of Minnesota would be to keep an
open mind and go for it no matter what your experience with
agriculture is. If someone with the limited background I had can
succeed and flourish in this area of study, then I am confident
that anyone willing to work hard will also.
