Profile
I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia (in the former USSR). After
graduating from college, I have worked as an instructional
designer at a management development institute in Georgia for
five years, and as a research fellow at the Institute of World
Economy and International Relations in Moscow for four years (at
that time this was the leading think tank of the Soviet
government on the issues of foreign policy and international
management and economics). I came to the United States in 1990.
Some of my experiences in this country include: a research
fellowship at Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia Universities;
positions as visiting professor, research fellow, and later
program director and co-director of the entrepreneurship center
at the University of Minnesota; senior director of training and
development in the energy industry; faculty member at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at the University
of St. Thomas; research scientist at the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications; fellow of the Center for Ethical
Business Cultures. In addition, I have traveled to numerous
countries of the world (some of my favorite destinations are
Thailand, Penang (in Malaysia), and Great Britain), have taught
as an adjunct or visiting professor in MBA and OD programs in
the US and abroad, and have done research and consulting in
Europe, Asia, and North America.
My past research included studies (utilizing qualitative,
quantitative, and mixed-method approaches) in international
human resource development, entrepreneurship, knowledge
management, and organizational culture areas. Examples of my
recent empirical research include: a series of quantitative
survey-based studies, linking leadership styles and cultural
values of managers and employees in the US, Western and Eastern
Europe, and the former Soviet Union; qualitative and
quantitative studies of the meaning of working in Russia,
Germany, and Poland; a longitudinal study of human resource
practices and organization development in entrepreneurial firms
in the USA; a series of studies of knowledge generation and
sharing in a US-based multinational corporation. My most recent
area of research interest is the research on the interplay of
business ethics and organizational and national culture. I am
working on two related projects with a group of colleagues from
the Center for Ethical Business Cultures. Some of our research
in this area was recently published in the Journal of
Business Ethics and the Human Resource Development
Review.
