New Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development

Effective July 1, 2009, a new department has been created that integrates the business and marketing education, human resource development and adult education, and comprehensive WHRE programs from the Department of Work and Human Resource Education (WHRE) into the department formerly known as Educational Policy and Administration (EdPA). The name of this new department is Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development (OLPD). It will offer exciting opportunities for collaboration and interdisciplinary education and research. Click here for details.

Program Changes

As a result of this restructuring, programs in the former Department of Work and Human Resource Education (WHRE) have been affected as follows:

Human Resource Development, Adult Education, and Comprehensive WHRE Graduate Programs
The graduate programs will continue under the new Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development. Please contact Dr. James Brown, WHRE Director of Graduate Studies, at brown014@umn.edu or 612-624-7754, or Mary Gupta, executive secretary, at gupta006@umn.edu or 612-624-7485 if you have questions.

Human Resource Development and Business and Marketing Education Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate programs will continue under the new Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development with the exception of BME undergraduate licensure which has been suspended. For more information, please contact Orkideh Anderson at moha0104@umn.edu or 612-625-3150.

Business and Industry Education/Business and Marketing Programs
The business and marketing education master’s degree programs are being suspended. The College of Education and Human Development will continue to recommend admitted students to the Board of Teaching for business teacher licensure through June 2013. For questions about the BIE/BME programs such as the M.Ed., business teacher licensure, M.A. or pre-licensure (undergraduate level), please contact Jennifer Cherry at forr0042@umn.edu or at 612-624-7442.

Career and Technical Education
The WHRE credential review process for secondary CTE licensure will continue. For information regarding this licensure process, please contact Dr. Tom Stertz at ster0012@umn.edu or at 612-625-7250.

Technology Education
The B.S. program in technology education is being phased out. No new admissions will occur. Previously admitted students who have questions about the program should contact Dr. Tom Stertz at ster0012@umn.edu or 612-625-7250.

Agricultural, Food and Environmental Education
For information on the academic programs in AFEE, contact Dr. Bradley Greiman in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) at bgreiman@umn.edu or 612-624-5644.

Course Changes (Effective Spring 2010)

The following BIE/WHRE courses will be replaced by courses in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (CI) effective spring semester 2010.

BIE 5012—Advanced Word Processing CI 5351—Technology Tools for Educators (3 cr, AF or Audit) Develop skills in using technology applications to support teaching and learning. Internet applications, presentation software, Web 2.0 technologies, and Web site development.
BIE 5013—Spreadsheet Analysis Using Computers CI 5303—Data Analysis and Information Design for Business and Education (3 cr, OPT) Using spreadsheets, information visualization, and data management to create analytical models in business, education, and research settings.
BIE 5014—Database Computer Applications CI 5304—Data Management for Online Integration (3 cr, OPT) Using database software to organize, manage, and display online data, to create content management systems, and to integrate into existing Web sites.
BIE 5015—Integrated Computer Applications in Business and Marketing Education CI 5305—Integrated Computer Applications in Business and Marketing Education (3 cr, OPT) Case-based authentic business computing problems requiring integration of two or more application packages. Pedagogical issues of learning/teaching advanced computer applications.
BIE 5016—Web Development in Business

CI 5362—Foundations of Interactive Design for Web-based Learning (3 cr, OPT) Processes of designing/developing interactive learning media and online applications from ground up. Focuses on usability/aesthetics in online learning.
BIE 5463—Methods in Teaching Keyboarding and Word Processing CI 5300—Teaching Introductory Computer Concepts and Skills (1-3 cr, AF or Audit) Pedagogical strategies for teaching keyboarding and word processing.
BIE 5662—Computer Training in School and Industry Settings CI 5361—Teaching and Learning with the Internet (3 cr, OPT) Implications/challenges in using Internet-based technologies in classroom. Pedagogical models.
WHRE 3011W—Introduction to Technology and Public Ethics CI 3311W—Introduction to Technology and Public Ethics (3 cr, OPT) Values, ethical issues related to technology use in education, workplace, and family/community life.
WHRE 5011W—Technology and Public Ethics CI 5311W—Technology and Public Ethics (3 cr, AF or Audit) Values and ethical issues related to technology use in education, workplace, and family/community life.
WHRE 5628—Multimedia Presentations in Business CI 5363—New Media and Interaction Design for Web-based Learning (3 cr, OPT) New media design from perspective of instructional designer. Designing with Adobe Flash environment. Context of authentic design problems. Consideration of raster/vector imaging, web video optimization, and usability analysis.

OLPD Web Site

A new web site is in development to combine all the programs and information from the former Departments of Educational Policy and Administration (EdPA) and Work and Human Resource Education (WHRE) into the new Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development (OLPD)
