New Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development
Effective July 1, 2009, a new department has been created that integrates the business and marketing education, human resource development and adult education, and comprehensive WHRE programs from the Department of Work and Human Resource Education (WHRE) into the department formerly known as Educational Policy and Administration (EdPA). The name of this new department is Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development (OLPD). Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programs

We offer two M.Ed. programs: initial teacher licensure and professional studies.

Master of Education (M.Ed.)/Professional Studies

Multiple majors are offered within the M.Ed./professional studies program offered by the Department of Work and Human Resource Education in the College of Human Development (CEHD). These are graduate-level, practitioner-based programs designed for professional educators desiring advanced professional study. These programs can be tailored to meet the needs of individual students in the areas of:

Persons involved in WHRE roles find this degree program very accommodating. Student work with their adviser to:

  • select proposed specialization courses consistent with their professional goals
  • select the course(s) to meet the general aspects requirement
  • design and complete the integrating project

The proposed program is submitted by the student and adviser to the department director of graduate studies for departmental review and potential approval.

Two types of M.Ed./Professional studies plans are offered. Plan I is for licensed educators planning to pursue advanced professional study. Plan II is for professionals seeking additional education. Plan I requires a minimum of 12 semester credits in the department. Plan II requires a minimum of 18 semester credits in the department. A maximum of 6 semester credits in field-based projects, problems courses, directed study, independent study, and internships may be used in the program. The degree program requires a minimum of 30 semester credits at or above the 5000-level.

Master of Education (M.Ed.)/Initial Licensure

The M.Ed./initial licensure programs are for individuals seeking initial teacher licensure. They provide substantial classroom experience for grades 5-12 and emphasize educational foundations, pedagogical systems, and research methodologies.

The College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) consistently ranks in the top 10 according to various national professional surveys and media. Our students benefit from the fact that throughout every department in the College, faculty and staff are working collaboratively on research and outreach in the state's grade 5-12 community. Admission Requirements and Procedures

Admission Requirements

Any student with a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university may apply for admission to an M.Ed. program. Applicants with the necessary background, a sound scholastic record in an appropriate degree, and the appropriate professional qualifications may be admitted to the degree program on recommendation of the department's director of graduate studies (DGS) acting on behalf of the faculty and with the approval of the College.

Specific admission requirements include the following:

  • Undergraduate degree GPA of 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Grade point average of 3.25 for prior graduate level, post-baccalaureate courses
  • A goal statement of one or two pages
  • A personal resume
  • Evidence of English language proficiency if English is not your native language

As a prospective M.Ed. student, you may wish to attend a group information session or arrange a conference with the director of graduate studies (DGS) or a faculty member in the specialization of your interest to gather additional information. Application Deadlines

M.Ed./Initial licensure application deadlines vary by specialization.

Agricultural education
March 15 - to enroll summer session
June 15 - to enroll fall semester
October 1 - to enroll spring semester

Business and marketing education
April 15 - to enroll summer session
April 15 - to enroll fall semester
October 1 - to enroll spring semester

Industrial education (technology education)
April 1- to enroll summer session
July 1 - to enroll fall semester
October 1 - to enroll spring semester

M.Ed./Professional studies applications are reviewed by the College on an ongoing basis. Candidates are should submit application materials by the following dates:
March 1 - to enroll summer session
July 1- to enroll fall semester
November 1 - to enroll spring semester

Application Review

Applications are reviewed on a regular basis. The file must be complete before Student Services will request the department to review the application. The director of graduate studies (DGS) reviews the applicant's previous academic work, goal statement, and test information. The recommendation will be forwarded to Student Services, which will notify the applicant by letter on its decision to admit or reject. Applicants who do not meet the undergraduate GPA guideline will be informed by the DGS of their options for additional evidence. The DGS may elect to have files reviewed by the appropriate specialization faculty if there is a question of admissibility.
