Reciprocal Teaching

Upper elementary and above

Strategy Steps:

  1. At the beginning of each lesson, teacher explains to students why they are learning this strategy. (They are learning to ask important questions that help them summarize, clarify, and make predictions about future content.)
  2. The teacher models how to lead a discussion about a paragraph in the text.
    1. Students read one paragraph.
    2. Teacher asks one student to answer an important question about the information in the paragraph.
    3. Teacher summarizes the paragraph in one or two sentences.
    4. Teacher clarifies any part of the paragraph that seems to be confusing to the students.
    5. Teacher predicts what the next paragraph might be about.
  3. Teacher continues to model paragraphs until the students understand the process.
  4. Teacher names a student to become the "teacher."
  5. Teacher provides as much support and guidance as needed.
  6. Student "teacher" names the next "teacher" to lead discussion.
  7. Teacher provides much praise and positive feedback.
