M.Ed. and Initial Teaching License in Elementary Education with a focus on Dual Language and Immersion
This two-year program will prepare you to teach in both dual language/immersion (DLI) and elementary education taught in English. You will earn a Master’s of Education degree and qualify for an initial teaching license in K-6 Elementary Education. Infused throughout the program is DLI-specific content such as biliteracy development and language-focused teaching strategies.
Dual language immersion expertise is a high needs area in Minnesota. The Minnesota Advocates for Immersion Network estimates that more than 15,000 students in Minnesota learn their subject matter in a non-English language, including Hmong, Chinese, Spanish, Korean, German, French, and more.

- Education assistants or paraprofessionals who have undergraduate degrees
- Teachers seeking a Tier 3 license currently in immersion, indigenous and bilingual programs

This is an initial licensure program designed for those needing their first license only.
Master of Education
This program includes two components: initial licensure to be an elementary school (K-6) teacher in Minnesota and a Master of Education degree.
Combining an M.Ed. with your teaching license offers the following advantages:
- Teachers with a master's degree are regarded as experts in their field, making you a more competitive job candidate with an M.Ed.
- Teachers who have a master's degree will see a roughly $7,000 annual salary increase [Teacher.org]
- Though the salary increase with a master's degree will vary by district and state, Minnesota teachers are on the higher end of the payscale.
- Once a teacher is employed, there is much more mobility that comes with a master's degree. Teachers with advanced degrees can be promoted to school administration positions and can become mentors to other teachers based upon their graduate training.
Timeline for the June 2020 cohort (2 years)
Summer 2020: 6 credits, 6 weeks Monday through Friday, UMN Twin Cities
Fall 2020: 6 credits, every other Saturday, partially online, UMN Twin Cities, 50 hour in-school practicum in a Dual Language or Immersion school
Spring 2021: 6 credits, every other Saturday, partially online, UMN Twin Cities
Summer 2021: 6 credits, 6 weeks Monday through Friday, practicum in the Minneapolis Public Schools
Fall 2021: 6 credits, every other Saturday, partially online, UMN Twin Cities, Student Teaching in a Dual Language or Immersion school (12 continuous weeks)
Spring 2022: 6 credits, every other Saturday, UMN Twin Cities, partially online
Infused throughout the program is the dual language and immersion-specific content including:
- Biliteracy development
- Language-focused teaching strategies
- Teaching English-language learners
- Culturally-responsive pedagogies
Our program is unique and offers the following core experiences:
- A teacher community studying together for 2 years
- Face-to-face and online coursework
- Candidates can complete the program while continuing to work
- Innovative and equity-driven curriculum
- University coursework concurrent with school based experiences
- We offer a reduced rate of $533 per credit. It will cost a total of $19,200, saving participants $5,000.
Admissions and Financial Aid
Priority deadline to apply: December 15, 2019
A bachelor's degree and a 2.80 GPA is required. All international students require transcript evaluations.
We will give 15 scholarships for candidates serving English Learners in two-way, dual immersion, or indigenous language classrooms (i.e. Hmong, Korean, Spanish, Ojibwe or Dakota).
You must have completed courses in at least three of the following areas before applying. Remaining prerequisite coursework may be completed during the program or before you begin the program.
- Introductory or general psychology
- College-level algebra
- Introductory science (biology, physics, chemistry, or astronomy)
- Social studies (history, human geography, or social science)
