About the program

Students in the psychological foundations of education program at the University of Minnesota study the psychological processes critical to education. Our research focuses on cognitive and factors shaping and enhancing learning throughout the lifespan. Our faculty and students do not just conduct laboratory experiments—we also put our research to work: in local schools on programs to improve students' reading and science outcomes and with members of our diverse communities to help our neighbors succeed at school and work.

Why choose the University of Minnesota?

  • Our department is consistently ranked in the top ten among educational psychology programs by U.S. News & World Report. In 2020, we were ranked #9.
  • Due to the various impacts of COVID-19 global pandemic, the psychological foundations of education program will NOT requir the gRE in its application for admission for 2021-22.
  • 100% of our psychological foundations of education doctoral students have been fully funded since 2008.
  • All faculty are currently accepting advisees.

Students in our program go on to a variety of careers

  • Higher education as faculty
  • Universities and companies as research scientists
  • Informal Learning Spaces as research scientists and curriculum designers (i.e., museums)
  • Government agencies
  • Other educational settings (e.g., K-12 school research offices or curriculum and instruction offices)
  • Human and social service organizations
  • Health care organization evaluators/researchers
  • Research and development centers

What is it like to be a psych foundations student?

Students in our program join as a cohort of scholars with common schedules for coursework and degree milestones. As they are welcomed into our community, they will experience strong faculty and peer mentoring throughout their training.

Our program is committed to creating a culture of inclusion where diverse identities, backgrounds, views and perspectives are welcome and respected.

Because our campus is located in the Twin Cities our researchers have strong connections to diverse communities and are able to participate in impactful, community-engaged research.
