Background: Jean Morris Helms grew up in Saint Paul and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Minnesota in 1942. As a student, Jean excelled in swimming, was a swimming instructor for three years and was a leader in the Aquatic League. After teaching for two years in East Grand Forks and Excelsior, Jean enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 due to the military's pressing need for physical therapists. She met her husband, Lloyd Clinton Helms, a veteran recovering from injuries sustained in the Battle of the Bulge, while stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. Jean has demonstrated an enduring commitment to the University over great geographic distance and despite a rich range of interests. She also has retained a love for physical activity and has remained an accomplished athlete. By establishing this scholarship, Jean hopes to express gratitude for the financial assistance she received from the University when she was a student. Moreover, she desires to assist deserving students who share her dedication to physical education and the benefits of athletic pursuits.
