Nancy Sherwood from the Obesity Prevention Center at the University of Minnesota will present "The NET-Works Trial: Linking families, communities, and primary care to prevent obesity in preschool-age children."
The NET-Works (Now Everybody Together for Amazing and Healthful Kids) study is one of four obesity prevention and/or treatment trials that are part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and National Institute of Child Health and Human Development-funded Childhood Obesity Prevention and Treatment (COPTR) Consortium. The goal of NET-Works is to design an intervention that integrates strategies that promote healthy eating, activity patterns, and positive parenting into existing organizations and community-based programmatic initiatives utilized, trusted and valued by parents.
The multi-component, multi-setting intervention includes home visiting, parenting classes (based on the ECFE model), pediatric primary care, and neighborhood connections. More than 500 racially/ethnically diverse and low-income two- to four-year-old children and their parent or primary caregiver were randomized to the multi-component intervention or to a usual care comparison group for a three-year period.
