Dean Rodriguez named UMN Morris Chancellor, Symons to serve as Interim CEHD Dean
Effective January 1, 2026, Dean Michael C. Rodriguez will serve as the chancellor of the University of Minnesota Morris into 2028. When the term concludes, Rodriguez will return to his role as dean of CEHD, a position he describes as one of deep fulfillment and purpose. “Serving as dean of CEHD since 2020 has proven to me that it is an honor to serve and has been more rewarding than I could have ever imagined,” Rodriguez said. “Working with my colleagues in the college, at the University, and across the UMN campuses, in schools, state agencies, and in industries is work that I have cherished and I look forward to continuing upon my return.”
During Rodriguez’s appointment at Morris, Senior Associate Dean Frank Symons will serve as Interim Dean of CEHD. Symons has been a key part of CEHD’s academic leadership for more than a decade and brings 25 years of experience with the University, beginning as an assistant professor and serving the last 11 years in his current role as senior associate dean. “When I was asked by Provost Ritter to serve as Interim Dean, I said yes for many of the same reasons that Michael shared,” Symons said. “Like Michael, my decision is rooted in a deep commitment to the University. I’m fully committed to continuing the work we’ve started together as we build on our strategic roadmap.”
In announcing the leadership changes, Provost Ritter expressed her appreciation for the dedication and service of both Rodriguez and Symons. “I am so grateful to both Dean Rodriguez and Senior Associate Dean Symons for their willingness to step into these critical leadership positions and serve the University. My commitment to each of you is the full support of my office as you navigate these changes.”
In the coming months, Rodriguez and Symons will work closely to ensure a smooth and thoughtful leadership transition. Both leaders expressed deep appreciation for the CEHD community and shared optimism for what lies ahead.
